Her Story
A life as a Muralist.
Khuzami has been designing and creating mural projects for over two decades, appearing on HGTV in their Modern Masters TV series, in the New York Times, The Post, The Gettysburg Times, NY Magazine, and Details Magazine among other publications.
In the late 80’s, after working as an illustrator, Khuzami started designing and painting murals for Evergreene Architectural Arts.
In 1993 , along with a small group of selected artists, she helped create 26 new historical murals for The Capitol Building in Washington D.C. The project’s theme, America’s Westward Expansion, would include 8 months of research and design, followed by 5 months of painting on the ten barrel-and-groin-vaulted bays inside The Capitol Building. “As a young artist, to be able to leave my mark on the Capitol Building’s walls, is nothing short of miraculous.” and to this day feels blessed.
In 1996 she opened her own mural company, Khuzami Studio, and has since created murals for corporate, public, and private commissions including many trips painting murals throughout Japan with Japanese artist Mutsumi Saito of Moo Painting Studios.
In 2003, Khuzami started working with Harry Medina, Window designer for Bloomingdale’s Lexington Avenue store and helped create specialty window backdrops and finishes.
Then in 2008, she was asked to design and produce Bloomingdale’s famous Lexington Avenue Holiday Windows creating hand-painted vintage 1950’s Christmas scenes.
Recent projects include a commission by a financial firm on Fifth Ave to create two WPA style murals for their offices and another for a Japanese architectural firm in Kyoto, creating travel poster style murals for a boutique hotel in Kyoto, and painting directly on their walls. Currently, Khuzami continues painting historical and liturgical murals for Evergreene Architectural Arts, and other companies and continues her private commissions. Also, she is very excited to have joined the Scenic Artist Union in New York and is thrilled to journey into the world of film and theater production, now a growing industry in NYC.
In her own time, Khuzami paints personal work, which is inspired by dollhouse interiors, muscle men dolls, and octopus themes and has in the past recent years started exhibiting in group shows in Bushwick, the Lower East Side, Carter Burden Gallery, and Jonathan Levine Projects Gallery, in New York.
Vicki Khuzami
Vicki Khuzami began her career in NYC painting Harlequin Romance Novel Book covers. One day after four years, she came upon a nondescript storefront in the garment district that had some interesting photos of large paintings within interiors. She spontaneously knocked on the door and asked, “What do you do here?” “Murals” was the answer she was given. “Murals? Well… I’m an illustrator.” “Oh good, why don’t you bring your portfolio by?” was the reply.
The company was Evergreene Painting Studios, which would eventually become one of the largest mural, conservation, and restoration companies known today as Evergreene Architectural Arts.
